NYC Progressive Caucus

What is the Progressive Caucus?

The New York City Council Progressive Caucus is a group of City Council Members who work together to advocate for progressive laws, policies, and government practices inside and outside of City Hall. Former City Council Members Brad Lander and Melissa Mark-Viverito founded the Caucus in 2009. Since then, our members have successfully passed progressive budget items and legislation, including reversing unnecessary budget cuts, ending mandatory broker’s fees for tenants, and more.

At the beginning of each City Council term, our members collectively choose 10 or more legislative priorities. We advocate for policies that put the interests of working New Yorkers over corporate interests and that advance racial, economic, and social justice. You can read more about our principles here.

Council Members Sandy Nurse and Shahanna Hanif currently serve as Progressive Caucus Chairs and Council Members Carmen De La Rosa and Jennifer Guttierez serve as our Vice Chairs. Our full list of Council Members is below.
