The New York City Council Progressive Caucus is seeking a motivated intern for the spring 2017 semester with an interest in public service, city government, legislation, and public policy.

The NYCC Progressive Caucus was founded in 2009 as an advocate for social and economic justice within the City Council. The Caucus has been instrumental in the passage of employment discrimination, tenant displacement, and environmental protection legislation in New York City.

The internship is an excellent opportunity to learn about the inside workings of city government and gain hands on experience working in politics. The Progressive Caucus intern will support the Director in researching policy and potential legislation, planning and executing advocacy campaigns and events, and assisting with projects related to media relations, social media, and website development, as well as office management tasks.

Responsibilities and duties include:

Policy Research

  • Research Caucus members, status of bills on policy platform, and newly introduced legislation
  • Follow key issues and their relevance to current political climate, the public, and the media

Advocacy & Events

  • Assist in planning advocacy campaigns and events related to policy platform and key issues
  • Schedule events and meetings for members
  • Help with the organization of future advocacy events, Caucus conferences, and meetings

Press & Communications

  • Research journalists to expand our press list and pitch targeted stories
  • Draft press releases, sign on letters, statements, and content for website
  • Update the Progressive Caucus website with photos, press releases, and public letters
  • Take photos at press conferences and other events
  • Compile the monthly events calendar e-blast
  • Assist the Director in drafting the Fall 2016 Annual Report

Requirements:

The intern must be a self-starter and ability to work with little supervision, and have excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to oversee several projects. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies in policy, political science, public administration, or other fields related to government and politics are encouraged to apply. The hourly commitment and start and end dates are flexible, but 10-15 hours per week is recommended. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
